David Dwyers Custom IRC 39 MarinersCove.ie won Class One and retained her Overall RORC IRC National Championship Title after three days of close racing in the Solent. The 2009 UK National Champion strode to victory counting only firsts and seconds in the 8 race series.
Middle boat in the 2010 Irish Commodores Cup team the Vision Yachts-built Mariners Cove has a phenomenal record since she was launched in 2006, assisted by long-term tactician Andy Beadsworth who said "Before the championship we decided that we would judge our performance by how well we sailed rather than the result and that still stands. I believe that we covered the basics well and got our risk strategy right... That has enhanced our boat speed which is a crucial area in any kind of yacht racing. Marinerscove.ie is in great shape for the Rolex Commodores' Cup."
In Class Zero the custom Mills 40 EFG Bank Mandrake (ex-Tiamat, ex-Ngoni) was on course for success with 4 firsts in the first six races, but slipped to second in the final race. Purchased by Nick Burns and Fred Kinmonth, owners of the evergreen Mills 51 Mandrake to be the big boat in the Hong Kong Commodores Cup Team they felt it "was pretty hot racing out there. Great fun and fantastic stuff.”. Mike Bartholomew’s Summit 40 Tokoloshe of the South African Commodores Cup Team was in third, a set of results boding well for the many teams with Mills Design members at this Septembers Commodores Cup
John Cooper’s custom IRC 43 Cool Breeze straight-bulleted the 156th Annual New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta held at Newport last week. The Vision Yachts built beauty swept the second-largest fleet in this event, first run in 1845. Earlier the Summit 35 Act One won the NYYC Around the Island Race in IRC 4, the 40' fleet. They were the smallest boat in the class yet third to finish boat for boat, correcting out over four minutes ahead of the second place finisher.
New developments and rule changes mean 2011 winning designs are being discussed now, contact Mills Design for more information on how you can become a National Champion.
